Which garage door problems can't wait?

These six can't wait. They leave the house open, the car stuck, or a heavy door hanging where someone could walk under it.

Stuck open

The garage, and often the door into the house, sits open to the street. The usual reasons are a broken spring, sensors or a stripped gear.

Car trapped inside

The spring broke with the door down and the car on the wrong side. Lifting a full-weight door by hand isn't an option.

Hanging on one cable

One side up, one side down. A snapped or unwound cable leaves the door twisted and under load. Keep everyone clear.

Hit by a car

Backing into the door is the most common reason doors leave their tracks. Bent track and cracked sections usually come with it.

Won't reverse

If the door doesn't reverse when it touches something, or a hand through the beam doesn't stop it, it's not safe to run.

Storm or wind damage

A door bowed in or blown out of its track in high wind can't be locked. It needs to come down safely or be secured.

What counts as a garage door emergency in Kapolei?

Anything that leaves the house open, the car stuck, or a heavy door hanging unsafely. On the west side, the open door is the common one. Kapolei Village's original rules put an enclosed two-car garage on every detached home, so the garage is often the main way in. Wind raises the stakes. NWS Honolulu says spring trades can blow 30 mph and higher for days, and Kona storms, which bring south to southwest winds, hit mostly from November through March. A door stuck open in either takes in rain and debris. Hurricane Iwa battered the Waianae Coast in 1982. Never walk under a stopped, partly open door.

How an urgent call goes

From the phone call to a door that's safe

1

Call

Tell us if the door is open, shut or crooked, whether a car is inside, and your neighborhood. We'll tell you what's safe to do meanwhile.

2

Make it safe

First job on arrival: get the door's weight under control and stop it from dropping or twisting further. Then a written price.

3

Fix or secure

If the part for your door is on hand, it's fixed then. If it has to be ordered, the door is closed and locked until it arrives.

4

Test

Full open-and-close cycles, a balance check, and the reversal test before we leave the house locked up again.

Scheduled garage door repairs in Kapolei

Noisy rollers, a tired opener or a door you want replaced can go on the calendar. Pick the repair that fits.

01

Right now

We answer from 7am to 10pm every day, so evening calls are fine. We're not a 24-hour service. After 10pm, send the form and we call first thing in the morning. If the door is stuck open overnight, lock the door between the garage and the house.
Less than you'd think, safely. Don't force it by hand and don't keep hitting the button. Check that nothing blocks the sensors and that both sensor lights are steady. If that doesn't do it, leave the door where it is, keep people out from under it, and call.
Usually you can't, safely, until the spring is replaced. Genie says a door with a broken spring shouldn't be operated by hand or with the opener. Tell us a car is trapped when you call. If you need to leave right away, a ride or a taxi is safer than lifting the door.
Only with the door fully closed. LiftMaster's manual warns that a door with weak or broken springs can fall rapidly if released while open. With the door shut and the springs intact, the release lets you lift it by hand during a power outage.
The door hangs crooked, higher on one side, and the other cable holds weight it wasn't meant to hold alone. It can twist or drop further. Don't run the opener, don't try to straighten it, and keep kids and pets well away until it's fixed.
02

After the scare

Most often because a car hit it. Worn rollers, loose track and broken cables are the other usual causes. The fix depends on what bent: rollers can be reset, track straightened or replaced, and damaged sections swapped if your panel is still made. Don't run the opener first.
Whether the door is open, closed or crooked; whether you heard a bang; whether a car is inside; and where you are. A photo of the door and the bar above it helps.
With the door closed and the springs working, pull the release cord and lift the door by hand. It should feel light. If it's heavy, stop, because a spring may be broken. Openers with a battery backup keep working through short outages.
Keep it closed and don't run it in high wind. If the door already rattles, bows or sits loose in the track, get it checked before a Kona storm or a hurricane watch. DASMA publishes guidance on securing garage doors for high-wind events.
Kapolei and Makakilo first, then Ewa Beach, Ocean Pointe, Ewa Gentry, Hoopili, Ko Olina, Kalaeloa, Waipahu and Waipio. Waianae is about 14 miles up Farrington Highway from Kapolei, so expect a longer wait on that coast.
