Where we work

Up and down Makakilo Drive

Makakilo climbs from about 150 feet near the freeway to well over 1,000 feet on the upper slopes. We cover all of it.

Newer

Kahiwelo

A 475-home D.R. Horton subdivision near the bottom of Makakilo Drive, first homes from 2008.

Older

Original hillside streets

Makakilo's first homes went up in the 1960s and 1970s on the slopes of the Waianae Range.

Upper slopes

Upper Makakilo

The highest streets, closest to the ridge, where wind and rain run highest.

Nearby

Honokai Hale

The neighborhood next door, on the same Makakilo, Kapolei and Honokai Hale neighborhood board.

What makes Makakilo garage doors different?

Height, wind and a mix of ages. Makakilo rises from about 150 feet to over 1,000, and when the Weather Service issues Oahu wind advisories, Makakilo has been named, with the strongest gusts where wind blows downslope off the Waianae Range. A garage door is one of the biggest openings on a house, so loose rollers, worn hinges and tired springs show up quickly. The ages are mixed too: about 39% of homes went up before 1980 and 26% after 2000, so an original 1970s door can sit a few streets from a Kahiwelo door on its first springs. The ridge above even averages about 31 inches of rain.

That's why we check hardware tightness and door balance on every Makakilo visit, not only the part that broke.

Local notes

Street by street

Kahiwelo

Homes from 2008 on are now reaching the cycle limits of their first springs. Original openers there are worth checking before they strip a gear.

The 1960s and 1970s streets

Older doors may still run extension springs along the tracks. Each one needs a safety cable through it, and openers this old may predate photo eyes.

Upper Makakilo

Closest to the ridge, where wind gusts and rain run highest. Rattling doors and rusting bottom brackets are the early signs.

Subdivisions with associations

If your street has a homeowners association, check its design rules before changing your door's style or color.

Through the year

Hillside weather and your garage door

Oct to Jan

The wet months

December averages about 4.6 inches on the ridge above Makakilo, and October and January come close. Wet tracks and bottom seals take the hit.

Winter

Wind advisories

A February 2020 advisory named Makakilo, with gusts to 50 mph near ridges and downslope. Doors loose in their tracks rattle first.

Summer

Dry spell

July is the driest month on the ridge, about 1.3 inches. Lower Makakilo is drier still, close to the Ewa plain.

Jun to Nov

Hurricane season

Higher ground means more exposure to wind. Have a bowed or loose door checked before a watch is posted.

Makakilo garages

Yes, from Kahiwelo near the bottom of Makakilo Drive to the highest streets, plus Honokai Hale next door. Give us your street and we'll know roughly how old the door is before we arrive.
Loose hinges, worn rollers or track bolts that have backed out let the door move in its track. On the hillside that shows up fast. Tightening and new rollers usually fix it. A door that bows inward needs a closer look.
If you're replacing it, ask. Hawaii's residential code includes garage doors in its wind design requirements, and the building department decides what an address needs. A rated door only keeps its rating if it's installed exactly per its drawing.
Probably the springs. Homes there date from 2008 on, and most standard springs are rated around 10,000 cycles. As a spring weakens, the door feels heavier and the opener strains. A balance test shows it in a minute.
We'd advise against it. Lift cables hold the door's weight with the springs under tension, and a cable can't be reseated safely without controlling that tension. Leave the door where it is and call.

Booking in Makakilo

We're in Kapolei, under 3 miles below. We give you a time window when you call. Inside our 7am to 10pm hours, a stuck-open door or a trapped car goes first.
Some do. Homes from the 1960s and 1970s may still have extension springs running along the tracks instead of a torsion spring above the door. Both are fixable. Extension springs need safety cables, and converting to torsion is an option.
It wears the bottom seal and rusts the bottom brackets and track ends where water sits. The ridge above Makakilo averages about 31 inches a year. Keep the bottom seal in good shape and dry the tracks after a storm.
If your subdivision has an association, check its design rules before changing the door's style or color. A like-for-like spring or opener repair rarely needs approval. We can give you the door's specs for the application.
Yes, LiftMaster, Chamberlain, Genie, Linear and Craftsman, old and new. On older units we check for photo eyes first. Without them, the opener predates 1993 and replacement is the safe answer.
