Where we work

The whole coast from Nanakuli to Makaha

About 8 miles of homes along Farrington Highway, with the beaches on one side and the valleys on the other. We cover every town on it.

Town

Nanakuli

The first town past Ko Olina, with Hawaiian Home Lands homesteads and the largest households on the coast.

Town

Maili

The newest homes on the coast, with a median build year of 1992.

Town

Waianae

The coast's center, with Waianae Mall, the boat harbor and the most homes.

Town

Makaha

Mostly multi-unit buildings, with renters in the majority.

Valley

Lualualei and Waianae Valley

Hawaiian Home Lands homesteads and farm lots in the valleys behind the towns.

Valley

Makaha Valley

A small residential area up the valley behind Makaha.

What should Waianae Coast homeowners know about garage door repair?

That the homes are older, the shore is close and some of the land has its own rules. Waianae's median home was built in 1979 and Nanakuli's in 1977, with more than half of both built before 1980, so older springs and openers are common. Maili is the exception, with a median of 1992. The populated strip runs about 8 miles along the beach side of Farrington Highway, which puts salt on steel hardware. About 71% of the available Hawaiian Home Lands on Oahu are on this coast, and homestead improvements need written approval from the department before work starts. And Farrington is the only main road in or out.

So we plan coast calls with care: the door's age and type known before we leave, the likely parts lined up, and a realistic time window.

Local notes

Town by town

Nanakuli and the homesteads

On Hawaiian Home Lands, the Lessee Handbook requires written approval of design and materials for any improvement before work starts, on top of the city permit. A straight repair is simpler, but a new door should go through the department.

Waianae

More than half the homes were built before 1980, so older openers and extension springs come up often. Rust near the shore starts at the bottom brackets.

Maili

The newest homes on the coast, many now on their first or second set of springs.

Makaha

Most homes are in multi-unit buildings, so the garage door may fall under an association's maintenance plan. Check before ordering a new one.

Through the year

Coast weather and your door

Nov to Mar

Kona storms

January is the wettest month at the Waianae gauge, about 3.8 inches. Kona lows bring wind from the south and southwest, straight off the water.

Spring

Gusty trades

Strong spring trades can run for days. On the coast, wind carries salt and dust into tracks and rollers.

Summer

Bone dry

June and July average under half an inch of rain at Waianae. Sun and dust are the main wear, and the sensors face the glare.

Jun to Nov

Hurricane season

Hurricane Iwa battered the Waianae Coast with high surf and wind in 1982. Check a loose or bowed door before a watch.

Coast garages

Yes, the whole coast: Nanakuli, Maili, Waianae, Makaha and the valleys behind them. Tell us the town and street when you call so we can plan the drive and bring the right parts.
For a new door or any change to the structure, yes. The Lessee Handbook requires written approval of design and materials before work starts, in addition to the city permit. Like-for-like repairs to springs, cables or the opener are simpler.
Salt. Most homes on the coast sit within a short distance of the beach, and salt on steel speeds up rust on springs, rollers, hinges and the bottom edge. Rinse the door and hardware with mild soap and water every few months.
Check for photo eyes, the two small sensors near the floor. If it has none, it predates 1993 and should be replaced for safety. If it has them and still runs, a gear or board repair may keep it going.
Keep it closed if you can and don't run the opener. A bowed or bent door can come out of its track or put strain on the springs. Call us; if it can't be repaired the same visit, we secure it until the part arrives.

Booking on the coast

Waianae is about 14 miles from Kapolei on Farrington Highway, the only main road in. Traffic on Farrington decides most of it, so we give you a time window when you call.
Yes. A check covers balance, springs, cables, rollers, hinges and track bolts, the parts that let a door shift in high wind. DASMA publishes guidance on securing garage doors for high-wind events, and a tight, balanced door is the start of it.
Yes, if the door is yours to fix. In many Makaha buildings the association handles garage doors, so check your documents first. If it's your door, we treat it like any other repair.
No. An off-track door under spring tension can drop or twist. Leave it where it is, keep kids and pets away, and unplug the opener. Rollers and track can usually be set right once the cables are checked.
Open and close the door once and watch it. Listen for grinding, look for a crooked bottom edge, and check that the sensor lights are steady. Wet, salty tracks should be rinsed and dried. Anything odd, call before using it daily.
